Picked RAW for October 2014

Beyond Limits Opening Sat, Oct 4. to Nov 15. at the San Diego Art Institute ( Balboa Park) this show is curated by SDAI Executive Director Ginger Shulick Porcella and Brazilian curator Denise Carvalho, this exhibition will demonstrate that the future of the arts lies on a borderless, multidimensional circuit of experimentation. Featuring both local and international artists, “Beyond Limits” will bypass all borders that create hierarchies or limit the exchange of ideas. The exhibition will feature a series of lectures, performances, and video screenings. Watch for works by SD Art Prize artists Einar & Jamex de la Torre, Debby & Larry Kline and New Contemporary Margaret Noble.

Angela Jackson s art at the Café Gallery of North Coast Repertory Theater ( 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Ste.D. Solana Beach, 92075) has a reception on reception Oct 25th, from 4, 12:30pm – 1:30pm and will be on view at the same time as the new premier of Mark St. Germain's Freud’s Last Session through Sat Nov 9. Heads Up: Synergy Art Foundation  is inviting local artists to participate in 2014 “ FROM BLANKS 2 BEAUTY” (B2B) held at the World Beat Center, Balboa Park, on  Saturday, Nov 15, 2014. The theme this year is  Roots to be interpreted in any way that might appeal to the jurors Robert Pincus and Mark Lugo-Smith. The top 100 artworks will be displayed and auctioned at the event and again free canvas will be distributed at four locations in SD. Works on due Nov 1.For more info: meral@synergyart.org

Picked RAW for September 2014

Cathy Breslaw: Contemplation at the Gotthelf Art Gallery, San Diego Center for Jewish Culture, ( 4126 Executive Drive , La Jolla, 92037) Thurs., Sept. 11 at 7:30 pm until November 26. The central installation, is based on the shofar, the ancient instrument created from a ram's horn that Jews have used for centuries. The San Diego Museum of Art presentsSorolla and America, until August 21. The exhibition is the first retrospective on Spanish Post-Impressionist Joaquin Sorolla’s impact in the U.S. and will feature his most iconic works. The first work to enter the Museum’s collection was Sorolla’s Maria at La Granja , donated in 1925.

What’s Wrong with This Picture? Some Problems of Art in Our Time with Derrick R. Cartwright on Tue. Picked RAW for January 2014

The 2014 Art-A-Thon at Distinction Gallery (317 E. Grand Ave, Escondido, 92025 and online) is produced by ArtHatch for the third year and will benefit the non-profit art center’s teen program. . 20+ artists from San Diego County will seek donations to create artwork for up to 24 straight hours from 2 pm Sat. Jan 4 to Sun. Jan 5 at 2 pm. Proceeds from donations and art sales will be divided between the artists and ArtHatch. The public is invited to come and watch artists create during the entire 24 hours live or online via Livestream. The Opening Reception will be held the on Sat, Jan 11 from 6-10pm.
